Mary Daily: Caricature Artist

People frequently ask me how I got started working as a caricaturist.  My parents gave me a box of crayons when I was little and I was hooked.  The crayons lead to coloring, then drawing.  I took every art class my high school offered.  Ultimately, all of that preparation led to attending Washington University in Saint Louis School of Art, where I earned a Bachelor's of Fine Art degree.

During my senior year of college, a radio station called the school looking for some students to draw quick caricatures at a big party they were having.  The station was offering to pay us five times more per hour than the minimum wage that I was used to earning.  As all fledgling artists might, I wondered, "Hmm, can I do this?"  That voice of doubt was quickly drowned out by the much louder voice that said, "That will buy a lot of macaroni and cheese!"  So, I took the job, and lucky for me, I learned that I was pretty good at drawing caricatures on the spot.

In the late eighties, I ran a small pushcart at St. Louis Union Station called "Funny Faces" where I drew caricatures along with other artists.   St. Louis Post Dispatch newspaper columnist Jerry Berger wrote that Funny Faces was a "Must see."   You can't see Funny Faces anymore, because it's closed, but you can see my face.  That's my photo over there.  I'll let you decide if it's funny or not.

Currently, I draw caricatures at parties and special events in the Saint Louis, MO. area.  I love drawing caricatures; I like the challenge of getting a likeness while finding some humor in the drawing as well.  Some of my recent clients include the St. Louis Business Journal, the University of Missouri at St. Louis, Southwest Airlines, KinderCare, and La De Da Entertainment.  I am a member of the National Caricaturists' Network, and ISES, the International Society of Event Specialists.
